Due to this pandemic, many students wake up from the safety of their homes and enter the classroom almost every morning. However, many people also lack the space to focus on their homework. For Donnie Dewey, a local FishHawk resident, this need in the community has become a call to action. An opportunity to give back by building desks for students.

He has lived in Brandon since he was 8 years old and now lives in FishHawk. He has a deep love for the community. Coupled with the passion for carpentry taught to him by his stepfather, it led to the idea of handmade desks for students in need at home.

"I want to do something good in carpentry. What I want to do is not just try to build another thing, but also to serve." Dewey said.

There was a serious accident last year when Dewey's fingers were cut with a table saw, and woodworking became his therapy. As a result, Dewey felt guided to use his hobbies, which brought him hope, and he brought hope to the students in the community during his recovery.

Not only did Dewey and his family put love on each table, but they also spent time and precision to ensure that they fit the recipient, and more importantly, are safe for the recipient. His wife played an important role in preparing desks for students by finishing the finishing work on the wood.

With the help of the Media Relations Department of Hillsborough County Public Schools and Lithuania’s Seed of Hope, Dewey was able to connect with families with students who need to devote themselves exclusively to the school.

Dewey said: "My goal is to give them all common sense about school."

At present, about 30 desks have been made for local students, but the production speed has not decreased a bit. The family is determined to achieve their goal of building at least 100 desks and giving them away to online learning students for free.
