'Things jump out at me' — Two-wheeled artist makes Lincoln her canvas | Local | journalstar.com

Yun Saksena was waiting for traffic lights to commute to get off work by bicycle last week. The associate dean of education at the UNMC School of Dentistry makes Strava artwork-use maps and ride tracking apps to write words and draw pictures on bicycles around Lincoln.

Yun Saksena sketched the stick man on Firethorn Street.

Yun Saksena's largest Strava art is the head of a 46-mile-long dog that covers most of Lincoln.

Yun Saksena considered spelling out the word Christmas, but worried that it would be difficult for her to find a feasible route.

Yun Saksena started writing her 15-mile Christmas card at the corner of Eighth Street and Eighth Street.

She rode north along the map and into the South Valley. After more than an hour of sorting out, she made a route map. On J Street, she stepped a block east, then south, then east, and then south.

After more than 30 blocks and twelve turns, she is at the corner of 14th and A, and the tires have found her first letter: M.

Saksena rode her bicycle through the Near South community, all the way to D Street, returning to A again and again, until she reached Antelope Park.

She spelled out the first word: Merry.

An app on her phone is recording her every move.

She kept on the pedals, crossing the Witherbee Neighbourhood to Woods Park, to Piedmont, and finally to 56th Street and the end of the second word: Christmas.

Then, she rode home, uploaded her vacation map message from the Strava app, and posted the picture on the bike-friendly Facebook page.

She has gotten more than 230 likes-and got enough inspiration for her reenactment.

So, two weeks ago, Saksena got back on the bike in Zone 8 and A and started a 17-mile Happy New Year. "It's below freezing point. It's getting dark," she said. "But I knew it was going to be a snowstorm, so I needed to do that that night."

Yun Saksena rides a bicycle in the dark and below freezing temperature, wishing Lincoln a happy new year.

Saksena does not know if she is the only so-called Strava artist in the city, but since moving here from Boston three years ago, she has not found any other examples (although another Cyclist Joe Billesbach used a photo to take a Christmas post) his 18-mile holiday around Beatrice).

Saksena grew up in Australia, where she started the racing circuit. When she moved to the United States in 1994, she was also attracted to road racing and off-road racing.

After the family moved to Lincoln, the 49-year-old included mountain bikes on the list, where she served as the associate dean of education at the UNMC School of Dentistry on the East Campus.

But this year's pandemic put her into trouble, she only rode about 2500 times. It canceled her racing season. She works from home, so there is no 10-mile round trip. Even then, her work has become more busy, and she is still juggling three children, a dog and a husband.

She said: "Many of my friends have more free time, so they can go further." "I won't compete with them."

When she can ride a bike, she hopes that miles will have a certain purpose. The Strava art she started in Boston will provide her with a way to explore new neighborhoods and communities in new towns.

"I have goals, not random bike rides. It's like you have achieved something. I am creative."

She created nearly a dozen Strava artworks this year. Some are simple-there are 6 miles of sticks around Firethorn; a mile of acorns near Carlridge Road; climb the ladder on the east edge of Lincoln.

Some are more delicate, such as the head of a 46-mile-long dog that makes her hover in the city, from Bethany to West A to Edenton South, and there are a few around the city. This loop attracts people's attention.

Her process is organic. She likes to look at the city street map and let her next piece come to her. For example, for her "Happy New Year" ride, she realized that a diagonal section of Kottner Boulevard would fit the second Y axis.

"I'm looking for curves and other things. I just stared and things jumped up suddenly."

But they do not always go according to plan. She learned the difficult way that Strava can sometimes simply stop recording. Her popular streets were closed due to engineering reasons, the sidewalks passed through parks that she thought existed but did not exist, and the areas where they were expected to be paved were paved with gravel.

When she realized that Rosa Parks Way was an elevated highway, not the safest place for cyclists, she had just started tracking the dog's long nose.

"I haven't been in Lincoln that long, and don't really know that part of the town. It looks like a good road on the map."

She has no plans for the next work, but she is planning a work. Maybe when the weather is good.

She said: "I think I should do a spring course." "Spring is here."
