The drama itself is simple. Ja'Quin Taylor saw a hole and sprinted to the hoop. Jacob Wilson passed the ball to Taylor, who strode to grab the ball and layup it.

Taylor gave the basket with five seconds left in overtime, and the Statue of Liberty defeated the family Christian 65-64 at the FCA on Saturday night.

Taylor said, "I saw an opening next to the basket." "In the end someone needs to shoot there. This made me a reality."

This game is easier to explain than the story behind the non-divisional game between the 4A-level Patriots and the C-level FCA. The Flames (14-7) performed like their school strength, leading by 19 points in the third quarter.

The Statue of Liberty (5-3) played only the second game since the two-week COVID-19 quarantine on Wednesday, showing signs of knocking out the rust, while scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Having a deep roster also helps the winner. The Christian family had three players convicted of fouls in the fourth quarter and overtime.

"Simple and clear... they just messed us up at the end," FCA first-year coach Stefson Arnold said. "Depth is a huge difference between a 4A school and a small school like ours. But it will definitely help us as the season progresses."

FCA's AJ Mercier scored a game-high 16 points, while Tyler Flugence (15) and Chance Martin (14) also scored in double digits. Wilson leads the Statue of Liberty with 15 and Taylor leads with 10. The Patriots scored 10 points in the game.

Free football coach Brandon White said: "FCA...I gave them all the credit. They performed very well. "They got us into trouble. We are just fighting back and finding the groove again. Hope this is a step in the right direction.

"I can see it gathered together in the last quarter and overtime. We started shooting, moving the ball better and defending better. It will take some time."

Neither party started quickly. After a quarter, the Flames led 5-3. Liberty only took 1 out of 11 shots in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Patriots turned the ball 8 times after FCA achieved a 23-10 halftime lead. Flugence hit a 3-pointer, close to the Fire's first half score.

Flugence's other three-pointer-2:24 left in the third quarter-gave Christian Christian a 36-17 lead. But the Statue of Liberty scored 10 points in the last 12 points during this period and began to close the gap.
