On Wednesday night, a fire destroyed a dormitory at Tonga Omonuri Seventh-day Adventist Primary School in South Asia County of Niameira, exacerbating the fire in the country’s schools.

County Education Quality Assurance and Standards Officer Seje Sylvance said the fire broke out in the boys’ dormitory at around 8pm and spread quickly, destroying students’ items of unknown value.

Mr. Silvins said that this started when students were on night shifts.

He said: "I saw the smoke emitted from the boy's corrugated iron dormitory. All the students' property, including books, beds, uniforms and personal belongings, were destroyed."

After waiting for all items of the county fire brigade to be burned, no one was injured.

The force arrived two hours later.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The police said they have launched an investigation.

Silvins said: "The police and the criminal investigation department team inspected the fire scene. The scene was saved and awaiting further investigation by the crime scene personnel.

The parents who gathered to check on their children at the school asked for permission to go home with their children, but the education officials rejected the request.

The dormitory has 150 beds. Now the learners will sleep in the classroom under construction.
