The church has never looked like a traditional church. Once it undergoes extensive renovation, it will become smaller and smaller.

But don’t worry: The United Methodist Church near Community Road and Spur 25 has always been named because it includes a small enclave that can accommodate about 15 people, and can gather quietly and privately outside the converted temple. prayer. 500 to 600, senior pastor Jay Hanson (Jay Hanson) said. It will retain the ability to gather outdoors, but has an 80-foot by 25-foot porch at its main entrance.

After the pandemic was discontinued, the small church started face-to-face meetings again last summer under and near the large tent in the church parking lot. Some members joked that this was the Tabernacle, referring to the first meeting place between the Israelites in Egypt and the Promised Land.

Before the pandemic, the chapel met in a large metal building with chairs facing the pulpit, as was the case before the Biblical Baptist Church.

Hansen said: "We have been planning a renovation for a long time."

Then, COVID-19 came.

"We are not in the building. One thing we want to say is, "We can't, but we can," Hansen said.

In other words, when they could not meet in the original sanctuary, they decided to move in safer fresh air to keep people away from other worshipers.

Hansen said: "We have tents." The Methodists have a history of reviving tents.

To pay tribute to the informal and friendly fellowship, the church decided to add a portico. The roof and the concrete floor are inside and can be completed soon.

He said: "We think this will become an important part of our ministry."

Indeed, it has been used.

After his invitation on the last Sunday, Hansen said: "I looked at the porch. I said: "If you have just accepted Christ and want to sit on the porch and talk about Jesus..."

He said that at least seven people came to the porch to chat. Meetings under the tent are not always smooth. It was hot and uncomfortable, numb and cold, and the weather was bad, but Hansen had a way to stride forward. For example, there is a low place at the end of the canopy to collect water when it rains like last weekend. A gust of wind blows, the tent rolls, and the collected water is poured on the asphalt, splashing some people in the back corner.

"Remember your baptism," Hansen said.

Because of the way the admirers were scattered under the tent, under the oak trees, and on the lawn, it didn't wet much. Some tailgates sit in open SUVs and vans to face the service, while others carry beach chairs or lawn chairs far away from the tent. There are live broadcast services at 8:45, 9:30 and 11:15 in the morning, but there are still many people watching the live streaming service at home.

The church had discussed some ambitious expansion plans, but withdrew for many reasons.

First, Hansen said: "This is not the time when you want to spend a lot of money."

He said: "No one knows how many people will come back." He stood in the new shelter with theater seats. "Our vision for this is that we think people are going to reconnect."

The theater seats started in the middle of the sanctuary and climbed to where there used to be a 100-seat balcony.

He said: "There are only about 30 good seats on the balcony," but all seats should have a good line of sight after the renovation.

More than half of the renovation cost will be spent on items that the congregation cannot see or at least not notice, such as new heating and air-conditioning systems, sprinklers for fire extinguishing, and new wires and circuit breakers.

Hansen said: "We are working hard to make it truly safe." Even after the epidemic subsides, greatly enhanced ventilation will make people safer.

As in the past, there will not be any benches or fixed seats in the main conference hall, just comfortable chairs that can be arranged to provide space.

He said: "Even if we can go back to the building, we want people to spread out."

They will be able to see and use the new church area.

He said: "When you talk about church, people tend to think of a prayer church or a wedding church with benches." "This is the heart. People can come in and pray."

He compared it to an internal sanctuary, the "Sanctuary."

He said it can accommodate 15 seats, but chairs can be added to the wide entrance to expand it to around 100.

Moreover, the new porch will eventually provide a pleasant front door for the factory. The former main conference hall of the church is now converted into an office, facing Harris Farm Road, but the construction of Spur 25 split into two and cut off Harris Farm. The main entrance is now by the community road, and the porch entrance can be clearly seen from the busy Spur 25.

The entrance to Harris Farm will remain, but the fellowship begins on the other side, where there is a coffee bar inside the door with windows leading to the balcony.

"We drink a lot of coffee. Not providing coffee for everyone is a considerable savings for us," he joked.

And he is looking forward to the day when coffee costs will rise.
