After more than two years of construction, the new home of The Citadel Business School is ready to welcome students and professors.
The Bastin Hall of Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business is the first new academic building built on the campus of a public military school in 30 years.
The dean of the business school, Michael Weeks, said that the 44,000-square-foot building was built with students in mind.
From the fluent architectural design to the furniture used in the classrooms, everything is specially designed to create creative and collaborative spaces for students to work and study.
Wex said: "We believe that this will indeed change the educational experience of students."
Bastin Hall now hosts some of the university's most popular degree programs. Of the 2,400 members of the Cadet Corps, nearly 600 are mainly engaged in commercial activities. Another 375 castle students are pursuing an MBA or are pursuing an MBA program in school.
Although the finishing touch is still in progress, the first round of classes was held in the building on Monday. It is expected to be completed within two weeks and the opening ceremony will be held in April.
This $25 million building is located at the intersection of Hagood Avenue and Congress Street, across the street from the school’s football field and the alumni center.
It is one of the most popular functions of the college on campus.
After entering the main entrance, visitors will see a spacious public area/collaboration work area equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows and plenty of natural light. A circular stock ticker is hung from the high ceiling, and colorful numbers flash on its surface.
The new Bastin Hall building is a modern upgrade of the former business school residence. Bond Hall was originally built in 1922 and has had business school classrooms since the 1970s. Wicks said: "Here, we have a lot of state-of-the-art spaces, and this is what our previous old buildings did not have."
The brand new Bastin Hall gives you a glimpse of the modern learning environment of the 21st century.
Conyers Bull, the school’s multimedia services manager, said that most of the new classrooms are equipped with dual laser projectors, which have a much faster start/stop time than traditional ones.
Bull said that these rooms also include dual touch screen computer monitors, which means teachers don't have to turn their backs on students while teaching. If they want to write on the board, they can use the stylus to write on the touch screen.
However, one of the most anticipated technologies is the building's professional sales laboratory.
At first glance, this space may look like a traditional Bastin Hall classroom with dozens of tables and corresponding portable whiteboards. Before the start of the global coronavirus pandemic, these whiteboards will be stored next to the students' chairs, but they have since been converted into temporary virus blocking zones.
Inside the sales laboratory, multiple cameras are installed on the ceiling. Professors can use special software to connect it to cameras and microphones in nearby breakout rooms, where they can observe simulated sales promotion and role-playing exercises in real time.
They can even provide feedback or suggestions to speakers remotely from their location in the main laboratory.
Bob Riegler, head of marketing, supply chain management and economics, said that this technology is more than one game changer.
In addition to sales training, the laboratory can also be used to teach interview skills or conflict resolution training.
Riggle said: "This is indeed the most advanced." "This is the best product on the market."
On Monday, Riggle taught his first course in the new building.
He said: "The feedback from the students is amazing. They are really excited." "This is something they need to break to the next level."
Rick Bastin graduated from "Castle" in 1965, and he recalled his business course at Bond Hall.
He said: "When I was there, we didn't have air conditioning, which I didn't expect. We had open windows."
When he recalled his time there and his professors, Bastin was impressed that the university had changed a lot since he entered the campus.
When he was a student, calculator was just getting started.
He said: "We used to have to go to the table and the book to figure out all these things, now everything is at your fingertips."
Now, after Bastin was a student himself for more than 50 years, the Florida resident has been looking forward to finally seeing the new business school building named after him.
The state-of-the-art facilities were made possible because Bastan and his wife Mary Lee provided more than $6 million in gifts through the Castle Foundation.
Their family has provided support to the university for many years, having previously provided funds to create the Bastin Financial Lab. Since then, the space has been renamed Mary Lee and Rick Bastin of Financial Trading Lab '65 and is one of the main focuses of the new business school building.
Bastin said that he hopes that the construction of a new building will help the castle attract highly skilled professors who have not joined the college.
He said: "I want to see them stand at the forefront of technology and bring in teachers who are very comfortable with it."
In addition to the sales and financial laboratories, the new building also houses a consulting center and entrepreneurial innovation laboratory. The new building also includes a roof terrace that can be used for large gatherings and events.
Wicks said: "All these laboratories and all the technologies are connected, so they can take their ideas and put them into practice."
Cadet Taurus Brown, who participated in the castle under an Air Force contract, said that he was not only shocked by the new building, but how far he has traveled since he first enrolled in school.
Brown said: "I just think it will be a good place in the next few years." "I am very happy to see this building, I am very happy to be back and really see its changes."
Liollio Architecture was responsible for the design and construction of Bastin Hall. The THS contractor served as the general contractor for the project.

When we set out to overhaul our two science laboratories, one was in grades 5-6 and the other was in grades 7-8. We reworked our plan for the look and feel of a typical laboratory. We want a truly fascinating space where students are interested and excited about laboratory science.
We went to work. We updated the existing footprint with movable walls, comfortable seats and device chargers. The final result is far from the previous laboratory with a history of 20 years. This is what we learned in the process.
It is easy to replace tables, chairs, floors and air jets, and then call it a laboratory transformation, but we don't want to replace the existing space with more of the same space. Instead, we focus on building a future-oriented classroom for students.
We want students to think like Google or Apple engineers, scientists and collaborative teams. We ask ourselves some questions, such as: What is real learning like? What skills do our students need to know in the future? Moreover, how do we incorporate the 3Cs of collaboration, creativity and communication? Therefore, where traditional laboratories are more personalized and can collect data and report, all we want children to do is observe how science really works in a collaborative manner.
We installed movable walls, made full use of natural light, and worked with school furniture provider MiEN to propose an interior design that fits our core mission. One of the first things to do is the uncomfortable metal chair found in most scientific laboratories. We want students to sit down and collaborate comfortably. When you go to places like Starbucks or another cool cafe, many people are here to do their best. We want to imitate that atmosphere.
Together with our design partners, we are able to implement some new innovative concepts to support modern learning and collaboration. Some of these concepts include bar tables where students can gather; comfortable chairs that can move and swing; and comfortable sofas. As a one-to-one school, students can use iPads or Chromebooks, and we also provide sockets for charging devices and writing space at every site throughout the lab.
Be particularly clear about what your budget is and not allow it to increase. Keep your partners ahead; tell them how much you can spend, and ask them not to give you things that look down on you (this will only waste everyone's time). Finally, we must have a vision. Without these, you will never reach the desired location.
During the Industrial Revolution, most schools were set up for learning. It's time to make these spaces up to date. This is important, because today’s students learn differently from their predecessors. Therefore, where children still need to write books, hold books and participate in other traditional classroom activities, they also need flexible and creative spaces to learn. This is the premise for us to establish a new laboratory, and it has worked well so far.

If anyone writes a book about the protracted battle between SA and the Covid-19 pandemic, Monday will mark a new chapter-anticipation, hope and possibility.
This chapter will mark the beginning of our climax. Previously, there were many pages describing the country's 11-month campaign to best prevent the spread of infection and save lives.
These pages will attract the tears of many medical staff, who watch the patient holding their breath. Describes the despair of the breadwinner, who lost his job in an economy that has shrunk due to necessary life-saving restrictions; and drew pictures of silent streets.
At least two revellers participated in Ballito's Matric Rage event in the second half of last year and tested positive for the coronavirus.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) disclosed this in its latest bulletin, which analyzed data from the so-called "super spreader incident."
NICD stated that it received from
Kenya said on Friday that in addition to the 24 million vaccines it has ordered, it is seeking another 11 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and hopes to vaccinate 16 million people by June next year.
Additional doses will be purchased from major pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, and these doses will be obtained through the African Union’s Disease Prevention and Control Agency. The country said that if needed, the country will obtain supplies directly from manufacturers.
Mercy Mwangangi, a senior official of the Ministry of Health, told reporters that the East African country with a population of more than 50 million plans to vaccinate 1.25 million people in the first phase of the campaign in June this year. This will cover health and nursing staff as well as security and immigration personnel.
Family members in Mpumalanga and a friend of a public administration graduate were shocked by her death, just after she begged them to send her from Gauteng Hospital.
Daisy Maphosa's mother Linah Ndala told TimesLIVE on Sunday: "I am in Mpumalanga and Daisy works in Johannesburg. I only heard about it yesterday (Saturday). She is sick. We are planning to go to Gauteng and request that she be transferred to the Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria."
She said that Mapusas have always suffered from lung disease. One of her lungs was removed in 2003.
Local Russian news media said on Sunday that despite the ban announced by Kiev, Russia has begun to provide the Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine to the Donetsk region controlled by the rebels in eastern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government plans to start receiving vaccines made by the West in February and ban the use of Russian satellite V.
But it has little control over Donetsk, which borders Russia. Since 2014, clashes between the Ukrainian army and Moscow-backed separatist rebels have killed 13,000 people.
A state-owned newspaper in Zimbabwe reported on Sunday that Zimbabwe has allocated US$100 million to purchase the Covid-19 vaccine, but the government is still waiting for its scientists to recommend which vaccine to buy.
The first batch of Oxford AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine is now arriving in South Africa and will arrive in Johannesburg on Monday.
The vaccine delivered from the Serum Institute in India left Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Sunday and bound for OR Tambo International Airport.
Scientists said that the clinical trial data on the two Covid-19 vaccines showed that the first coronavirus variants identified in SA are weakening their ability to prevent diseases, stressing the need to vaccinate large numbers of people as soon as possible.
The federal government said on Sunday that Australia will invite pharmacies to participate in the promotion of the government-funded Covid-19 vaccine because the country has had no locally acquired cases for 14 consecutive days.
SA has received another 20 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine from pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, bringing the total order to more than 42 million doses.
Some companies that have no experience or expertise in Covid-19 hygiene have earned millions of dollars in revenue just by hiring subcontractors to work for the Gauteng government's R431m classroom hygiene plan.

In the Seattle area, this epidemic has had twists and turns. In most cases, the business will remain stable because the client wants to renovate the house.

Milazzo said that since March, sales of custom sofas, desks and carpets have been “hot”. She said that since many people started to work and attend classes at home, they have transformed their space into a multifunctional one.
Investment floor. "Putting a carpet under everything will only make your house warmer and more comfortable. In addition to the hard floor, you need to walk something."
Lighting is also very important. The lighting of the overhead tank is cold. The same goes for table lamps and floor lamps and more subtle light from different sources. I don't think people will always realize that having many small light sources is so powerful that it can make your space feel comfortable, warm and comfortable. "

The owner Lisa Myers describes Capers Home as
"Nearby store." Capers Home is located at the junction of West Seattle. It was originally a kitchenware store. Over the years, the store began selling various items such as dining tables, carpets, sofas and chairs. Since the pandemic, Myers has noticed that customers want to upgrade certain elements of their houses. She said that "layered" items that make the house comfortable, such as blankets, pillows and candles, are particularly popular.
Think about it carefully: "Once you have basic furniture pieces, no matter what they are, it adds texture, and these come from pillows, blankets and linens. The word people often use is "soft." Touch and feel are really important . What I’m talking about is a carpet that feels good, maybe you can play with your kids. Something that brings comfort, such as fuzzy and feel-good throws. All of this adds warmth to the house."
Ben Knudsen refers to Ballard's DIGS Showroom as a "lifestyle store", offering everything from kitchens to home decorations to children's areas. sort out. "I see a lot of people taking this opportunity to clean. Cleaning, organizing and organizing clothes can make your space more peaceful. Once you're done, maybe focus on the pieces you really like and enjoy, and it will be something for you. The difference. I have a lot of people changing sofas. It’s important to hang out in a comfortable place."
Katie Largent's 2,000 square foot showroom
On Capitol Hill, custom and non-custom furniture is provided, with simple decoration, from simple table lamps to king-size beds. She also provides interior design services through Zoom Consulting. During the pandemic, custom-made areas and sofas have been Arden Home’s best sellers.
Deliberately. "I think it’s really just taking time to think about problems and consciously paying attention to your space. This is the first step. Many people tend to just settle in their own residences without really taking the time to think about how they want their own The space has appearance and function."
Yes, this is a consignment store, but not just a second-hand market. Co-owner Victor Ghioni said Ballard Consignment Company is "a place where high-end furniture stores meet old-fashioned furniture stores." Ghioni also allows customers to "change hands" or exchange prices. Sofas sell particularly well because they are the "focus" of the house.
I want to be older. "If you want to nest and want some unique and interesting colors, this is the golden age now."
Kasala Furniture has branches in Bellevue and downtown Seattle, and has become Seattle's favorite in its 34-year history. Readers of Seattle Magazine named Casalla Furniture the "Best Home Furnishing Store of 2020." Marketing director Robert Bernard said that during the pandemic, sales of home office furniture soared.
Consider the texture. "When we think of home, it reflects to some extent who we are and how we go to the world. When we have to stay at home, we have to bring something from the outside world, and we can usually use these things every day And bring them back to the house. I will consider all these little comforts, such as plants, pillows and blankets and all these things that feel good."
Two Watson Kennedy stores in downtown Seattle offer more than 14,000 home furnishings. Owner Ted Kennedy Watson also opened a blog for people who need home decorating skills. In addition to hand sanitizers, the best-selling products also include original artwork.
